October 14, 2014 - sprouting acorn in Bent Tree

The Georgia DNR released a graph (see below) showing the results of the oak mast surveys from 1985 to 2014. Last year’s acorn production rating was the lowest during the 30 year period, and this year’s is the second highest (second only to 1988). Click here for last year’s related 11/14/2013 post. The acorn photo above was taken a month ago, shortly after a rain. There was an abundance of sprouting acorns.

October 29, 2014 - Deer eating a mushroom

Deer eat mushrooms, including some that are toxic to humans. This doe and young buck in Bent Tree were choosing mushrooms over the plentiful acorns.

October 11, 2014 - Buck following doe and fawn

It’s that time of year. A doe and fawn went running by (see photo below). A couple of minutes later, a buck followed their trail (see photo above).
